lost cd/dvd drives after winxp repair/install

dell dimension 2400 winxp pro sp2

I could not get the pc to boot up. so, I used the re-install cd to repair
windows. during the repair/install there were two files missing. one was
igixt.exe or something like that. the other one went by so fast I didn't get
the plate number ;-)

and now windows refuses to recognize the cd and dvd drives. I have tried
uninstalling them from device manager several times. each time the new
hardware wizard finds them but they are exclamation pointed.

ideas?

thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

The exact message would help here.) In the meantime:

Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and
double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

the link you provided on line 31 does not say restore 'cd/dvd in explorer'
it says 'windows xp startup boot performance" please advise.

Kelly,

I did another repair/reinstall and this time I wrote down the specific
messages it showed while running xp setup, like you asked :)

.. first it kept asking for file not found "igfxext.exe on Intel (r) extreme
graphics windows 2000xp install disk"

so I put in the 2000 xp install disk (actually it was already in) and it
still said not found. I browsed around for the file but couldn't find it.
finally gave up and skipped the file. this happens several times.

then towards the end of install this message came up:
COM+ SETUP ERROR
subcomponent COM+ raised an exception while processing
OC_COMPLETE_INSTALL setup message d:\\nt\com\com1x\src
complussetup\comsetup\csetuputil.cpp (line 3406) error code 0x08007007f
specified procedure could not be found failed to load library
c:\\windows\system32\catsrv.dll

finally when install was rebooting itself it hung on a black screen with a
big hourglass for about 15 minutes, so I manually restarted it.

what does it all mean? and more importantly, are these the things making my
pc act up recently? running slow, freezing, not recognizing hardware like
the Ethernet controller, windows explorer crashing every other time I try
to go into the control panel, apparent driver conflicts, bsod with varying
messages, etc?

any help, as always, will be greatly appreciated...

The files that are required are not on your Windows XP disk. They are
drivers for the hardware in your machine. You need to install your
motherboard drivers. If this is an OEM machine (HP, Dell, Sony) get the
drivers from the OEM's website. If this is a home-built machine or
someone built it for you, you need the drivers from the motherboard
mftr.

thanks. I had no idea that re-installing windows might necessitate reloading
motherboard drivers. just to clarify: the dell site does not have any
drivers for my motherboard per se. they do have updated drivers for
flashbios, chipset, ide/eide, among others. are these the drivers you refer
to? or should there be one specifically for my motherboard? thanks for your
patience, but I sure am learning alot!

Yes. Actually, your Dell system should have come with quite a few cd's.
One of them will be the operating system, one will be a Dell Resource
Disk, one might be for the modem drivers, and another might be for
third-party software. You want to install the Resource Disk, which will
have all the drivers on it. Install them:

chipset
video
sound
misc. drivers like usb
