Lost broadband connection (pretty desperate)

G

Greg

My daughter's laptop will not access the net via a dsl modem since an
undetermined time (she's been doing a lot of traveling abroad).

She has been able to access using a friend's Earthlink dialup account,
though. She has installed the Earthlink software, don't know if that has
affected things.

There was some spyware, which I think she has eliminated using adadware.

BTW, she's in another city, so this is a little difficult <grin>.

We know the DSL modem is OK as her roommate can get on via it. But when
Shelley connects her's to it, nothing. Odd thing is the icon on the tool
bar shows a live connection, and small amount of data up, but none down.

Some research on the adware she cleaned out seemed to indicate that
connections could be lost after getting rid of the adware. Suggestions
included reinstalling the TCP/IP stack. But, the sequence of steps
suggested in one forum did not exist as suggested.

She is desperate, new city with no one to help. I am not knowledgeable
on Win 2K, used to 98 and XP here.

Anyone have any walk throughs to diagnosing this? Things I can tell her
over the phone?

Thanks,
Greg

Here are a few preliminary steps.

Do this on her roommate's PC:
- Click Start / Run, then type cmd {OK}
(or, if it is a Win98 PC, type command {OK})
- Type this command: ipconfig /all
- Make a note of the DHCP status: Enabled or disabled.
- Make a note of these addresses:
IP Address
Default Gateway

Do this on Shelley's PC:
- Click Start / Run, then type cmd {OK}
- Type this command: ipconfig /all
- Make a note of the DHCP status: Enabled or disabled.
- Make a note of these addresses:
IP Address
Default Gateway

Report back with the details you collected for each PC
(DHCP status, IP Address, Default Gateway)

As a separate exercise: If her virus scanner has an integrated
firewall (e.g. Trend Internet Security), ask her to turn it off
during the tests.

Verizon. Philadelphia. I don't know if it is DHCP, but I have a feeling
it is not.

Westel wirespeed modem. I had her call VOL tech support. The one she
talked to claimed that Win 2000 Pro would not auto find an IP address.
That she needed the Verizon disk to set her laptop up.

Definetely not connected. Can't get an IP address or DNS from a command
prompt with ipconfig/all. Can't ping anything,, either.

I used to have Verizon, went to a small commercial ISP about a year and
a half ago. I seem to recall seeing you in the Veizon 0 groups. Right?
Still with them?

Haven't had the opportunity to do that yet.

Verizon in Philly PA is PPPoE.

This requires a PPPoE client. Verizon (my ISP as well) uses a software called WinPOET.
There are third part products such as RASPPPoE.

However, the *best* way to do this is with a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41.
The Linksys, not a PC on the LAN side, will make the PPPoE connection. All you have to is
load the Router with the account name and password. The LAN nodes don't need *any*
software. All she needs is to have the LAN nodes set to obtain its address DHCP which would
be enabled on the Router.

There are many advantages to such a device. This includes, but not limited to, a simplistic
fireWall to protect her against worms and hackers.

Sure Greg, That's was me. I'm still there in the Verizon Private News Space -0- we miss you
Greg ;-)

Can I post a message on your behalf in the Verizon General Discussion News Group ?

Sure. Tell everyone that in my case the grass really was greener on the
other side of the fence <smug grin>

I got the speed that V kept saying they couldn't give me. Much more
stable connection. I get live tech support in minutes everytime. And
when there are outside hardware problems my ISP gooses V to get them
fixed. And, unlike VOL level 1 tech support, they do not automatically
assume the problem lies between the seat and the keyboard.

See, my ISP is primarily a commercial provider, so even though I am
technically residential, they are very big on service.

Interestingly, Shelley bought a Linksys, but wanted to make sure she
could connect properly before she put it in. That may be the solution,
but I suspect there may be something else at play here because she
visited my brother in VA (VOL and using a router) and was unable to
connect there either when she had been able to a couple of months
previously.

Would you post her web site in the 0.general group? I used to show it
there occasionally, but the address is different now. And she's been to
more countries now with more pictures to show.

Skip is still there. So is HiEv, JHEM Dr, Maggot and others. There are a bunch of new
regs. and they all good people. Jammer Man got TOS'd and W. Mahler went to Comcast. Mahler
is still making an a$$ of himself. Remember, the following are Mahler's words, not mine

Followup: As with many things, it was something simple.

When she couldn't get on even behind a router, she called Linksys for
some help. It seems she had neglected to check the box for "never dial
up".

Thanks,
