lost all msword .doc files after upgrading to XP.Where are they now?

After upgrading to xp pro from Win98 I no longer had my
personal files from word, excel ect. I had full admin
rights and search but came up empty. I tried
uninstalling xp, but they still were gone. I did not
format the drive, so they should still be here
somewhere. Any suggestions on retrieving these valuable
files?

P.S. I know I should have done a backup, but everything
I read before upgrading said that all my files would be
intact. So I went for it.

Do you recall where exactly did you save the documents.
Did you perform a search on *.doc to search the entire hard disk.
