I lost all the icons in the notification area (where the
clock is), but the program still runs (as seen in process
viewer)

the "hide inactive icons" box is uncheckable in the
startbar and menu properties, and i cannot click on
the "customize" button next to it. so basically i'm stuck.

I tried the winME suggestion of trying to delete
systemiconcashe but i can't find that hidden file
anywhere, even after disabling "hide protected OS files"

is there anything else i can try to get the icons back?

thanks.

The loss of the icons is usually an indication that Windows Explorer has
crashed and restarted. Do you see all your desktop icons disappear and
come back? Spyware often causes WinEx problems. Check your event log and
see if Windows Explorer is giving any crash messages that are helpful.

That inactive icons option has always been problematic and might be a
red herring.
