Lost All Folders

After importing a large# of e-mails from my older computer (outlook express
xp) to a newer (windos mail, vista), all windows mail folders disapeared
whether the build in (inbox, sent, junk, delete,...all) as well as the
previously created folders. all gone, despite still existing inside the
storage folder.... any ideas how to retrieve & fix this problem. (p.s. the
program also stopped sending or receiving messages.

Make sure you are not using incompatible third party security
software. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Thanks Gary. Norton was installed as a part of the original recovery disk
that comes with new computers including vista as well. so how come the
manufacturer (Toshiba) combines uncompatable programs together...??

Probably because they're paid to do it and quick testing doesn't show
the problem.

possible but its bad reputation for the 3 of them (Toshiba, Symantic &
Microsoft..!!). Could it be because of a conflict occured after importing the
older e-mailes from xp system...?? any idea how to re-install Windows Mail
individually provided that Vista aquired is among the recovery diskm meening
that one could only reformat if any item on the disk is needed.

The incompatibility isn't widely known outside of this cadre of
Windows Mail experts. Sometimes it takes months of use
before things start misbehaving.

There is no way to reinstall Windows Mail by itself. There is a
repair-install for Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
but I don't know if you can do that with a recovery disk.

If it was me, I would fix the problem by upgrading to WLM:

If you have removed Norton run this tool to remove the rest of it:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then remove the account from WinMail and close WinMail.
Reopen WinMail and set up the account again.
