I recently changed the login on a windows to be setup as a workgroup instead of logging into a domain. Consequently I cannot locate the address book files. Are they deleted or still on the system somewhere

Should be in C:\documents and settings\<old user name>\application
data\microsoft\address book\<old user name>.wab.
That is unless the changes you made overwrote or otherwise destroyed the old
profiles.
