LOST ADDRESS BOOK DETAIL

After running scanpst I have lost my data. The list of contacts is still
there and the name appears in the "TO" line underlined, but when you send
there is no e-mail address info.

The list of contacts is as I said still there, just no group information, no
individual information.

You don't say what version of Outlook you're using. This is for Outlook 2003
and perhaps 2002 (I don't remember). The instructions for Outlook 2007 are
slightly different but you can probably figure them out once you read below.

This is a common occurrence when moving things around -- the association
between the Contacts folder and the Outlook Address Book gets broken. To fix
it, go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing
directories or address books", and click Next. If you don't see the OAB in
the Directories and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select
"Add a new directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and
add the OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog
box, and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.

Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an E-mail
address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these changes.

Hello Jocelyn.

I am using Outlook 2000. There is no "view or change existing directories
or address books".

When I click on "contacts" in the folders pane, there is a directory, but
the details are blank. As opposed to the new "contacts" folder which IS
blank, there are no individual contacts listed. I do see on viewing there
that those that I put in physical addresses still have that information, but
all information related to e-mail is gone. Totally.

I was confused by your usage of the term "Address Book" -- Outlook Contacts
are just that, Contacts. I know it seems like the same thing but when
troubleshooting it's good to know what the actual terms used by the program
are.

I don't suppose you have a backup of your .PST file? Did you allow the
Inbox Repair Tool to make one before you let it make any changes?

If not, see if any of the additional suggestions on this page help --
sometimes just running scanpst.exe more than once will help, but the page has
other ideas too: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.asp

I just found a "contact folder" that still contained the detail and copied it
to the folder. This is a complicated problem because all started with .pst
getting too large.

Then I had three inboxes all working. Now I have gotten to two working
inboxes, still only want one.

One folder has sub-folders and mail comes to the sub-folders but not to
inbox, the second folder has no sub-folders and mail is coming into the
inbox? Then of course depending on which folder I am answering mail in has a
copy in sent. So you can see I really messed up on running scanpst.

I hope copying the contacts will resolve the problem, though I just tried to
create mail and still no e-mail information, just the name underlined shows
in the "to" box. I'm going to keep working on it.

I suspect you are running Outlook 2000 in "Internet Mail Only" mode (you can
find out by looking at "About Microsoft Outlook" on the Help menu)...which is
unfortunate because if you were running OL2000 in Corporate/Workgroup mode
(and you dont' want to do that if you're a standalone user), or if you were
running a later version of Outlook, you could simply create a new mail
profile and attach one of your .PST files to it (which would give you only
one set of personal folders) and go from there. IMO mode doesn't give you
that option.

Whichever set of folders is collecting mail in the Inbox is your default
..PST. It should have "Outlook Today" at the root of its folders. There
should be a contacts folder in that set of folders -- copy the good contacts
from the other folder to that folder. Open the folder with the good
contacts, make sure it's set to show all contacts (an unfiltered table view
like Phone List is good), press CTRL+A to select all items, and right-click
and drag them to the default Contacts folder. When you release the mouse
button, choose the Copy option.

Does that help?

I will try what you suggest. However I have not been able to read my mail
two days now because as soon as Outlook is open the popups start. They seem
to be deleted mail messages that are now reminders? It is very confusing, by
the time 300 have opened up they cannot be closed. Will doing what you
suggest stop this? And what do you think created this problem? All I had
done was copy the correct contacts folder and delete the empty one.
Immediately the pop up windows started. It freezes up the computer.

In order to find that you had responded I had to open mail quickly open the
notification and click on the link to the forum. I then immediately closed
outlook before the popups started.

I don't know if I can ascertain which is the correct .pst. Except that I
have cut the size from 2 gig to 1.6 gig and that file is updating as far as I
can see.

My contacts list keeps losing its detail. I have not figured out how to
delete the one that is "empty" - names without detail. Each time I copy the
addresses and paste there a "new" contact folder is created. I now have
+Contacts. When you click the + it says +Contacts with Contacts1 listed
below that. If I click on the second + there is yet another contacts list.
None of them are working right. They start working with details there, then
next time I type in a name in my "to" line, the name appears with underline
but when I hit send I get the message that there is no recipient information.
I then have to go back to original contacts and copy paste again and of
course I keep getting the extra sub-folders.

Outlook is totally not working right.

Can I copy old .pst's to disk to get them off computer and reuse them again
if I need something filed there later?

Can I copy my addresses somewhere safe and delete somehow the empty primary
contacts folder?

I need step by step instructions working in Outlook 2000. I don't mind
starting over but because of legal issues I cannot lose my mail files. They
are involved in an ongoing issue regarding a board that I am on.
