I am unable to access my old documents that were on the desktop before I did
a re-install of windows. I probably out of luck, but here is what I did and
I would appreciate any help.
I used the add/remove facility to remove a couple of programs, and then
Windows XP Home edition SP1 would not start up again. I received an error
message that HAL.DLL was missing or corrupt. I booted off the CD and saw
that the file was still there.
I tried doing a "repair" install but just kept getting the same error message.
So I re-installed Windows, noting that it said I might lose my "My
documents" folder. Shame on me - I didn't worry since I had moved all my
files to a different folder before, and proceeded with the install. I think
the problem is that I moved them to another folder that was on the desktop.
After the install, I found I could access all the files from 3 user profiles
by looking at the "Documents & Settings" folder, but for 2 of the users,
including me, it appears they were empty and when I clicked on the user
folder I got an "access is denied" message. I don't know why 3 users would
be fine and 2 would be gone. All programs still seem to be there, although
not appearing on the desktop.
Is there any way at all I could recover the files that used to be on my
desktop ?
Many thanks if there is any help at all out there !
