Loss of focus

C

Cris Stout

Whenever I switch to my Inbox or to contacts, the first
item receives the focus (the first contact or email),
then the hour glass appears and then the item looses the
focus, but I'm not sure where to. This means that every
time I switch to another folder, I must wait and then
click on an item with the mouse to do anything in that
folder. Has anyone seen this behavior and have a
solution?

Thank you very much!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure anything is getting
blocked, as mail comes in and all my contacts are there.
It's just when switching, the focus will initially be one
the first item, then the focus goes somewhere else, just
not sure where. I press Enter or Tab or other keys and
nothing happens so I can't tell where the focus is going.

If you minimize Outlook, do you have any dialog boxes showing behind the
active screen? Also, do you have Instant Messaging turned on? Try turnning
it off if you do.

Hi Milly,

1) I am not using Instant Messaging
2) I have tried to minimize Outlook but do not see any
other items or windows with a focus. In fact, when I
select a new folder (inbox/contacts or others), Outlook
itself does not lose the focus, the program does have the
focus, but the item within the folder (the email item or
the contact) has the focus within the folder and then
looses the focus within a second. Once again, Outlook
itself as the running program still has the focus, just
not the item within the folder. I know this is tough,
it's sure baffling me! Thanks for tackling it.

Sorry to jump on your thread but this sounds like the problem that we are experiencing also

The symptoms that we have are that you open Outlook. You then open an email (preview pane is turned off) by double clicking on it from the main Outlook window, and the new window shows up UNDER/BEHIND the main Outlook window (the main Outlook window still has focus). The only way around this is to then minimize the main window. This does NOT happen all the time, and we cannot find any correlation as to when it does happen which makes it even more frustrating

We are running Outlook SP-3 (9.0.0.6627)

Sound similar?

I am having the same problem and it effects my calendar as well a
messages.

Today's date flashes in focus, then it goes away. Th
only way to get it back in focus is to click on it or click on anothe
date, then click on the "today" item on the menu bar. As soo
as I leave the calendar, the whole situation starts again

Well, two things refute that. One is that I use Outlook 2002, have Outlook
Today as my startup display and I DON'T have the problem. The second thing
is a later post in the very thread whose URL you included, and that later
post says:
I spoke too soon. It works but if you open another application or even windows
explorer then close the application the problem reappears. I thought I had
it!!

The problem is real and easily reproducible, although I don't recall the
steps offhand. It's a "known issue" that was discovered soon after Outlook
2002 was released (you can Google for the first reports) and AFAICR, it
wasn't fixed by a service pack. When I brought it to the attention of
Microsoft, we discovered it affected all the folders and happened after
Outlook Today was used.
