Loss of files when opening from USB stick

Every time I open a word document from a USB stick and then save back to the
stick I lose my file. Using Office 2003 and Vista x64 Ultimate.

Has anyone else seen this problem, or am I a fluke? I don't think it is a
hardware problem because I have no other problems when using my system. I
can reproduce this 100% of the time aswell under these circumstances.

Hi

I have just posted a new post with exactly the same problem. Did you ever
get to the bottom of it? I am really regretting the upgrade to Vista with
this type of problem.

I had the problem as well when I upgraded to Vista. I got round it
originally by reformatting my USB stick with an NTFS rather than FAT
file structure. But this meant it was no longer compatible with my
wife's Mac which was an inconvenience. Yesterday I tried again with a
FAT formatted drive and saves now seem to be working OK. So, with
luck, the problem has been solved by one of Microsoft's frequent
updates.

The problem seems to be permissions with writing data in programs. For some
reason the permissions for writing to a USB key differ from hard drive usage.
Because Vista isn't allowing writes by programs not running in admin mode,
this operation fails everytime; though, even if Word is run in admin mode the
error is still present.

The scariest thing about this is that you can, and will, lose your document
if you don't have it saved to the harddrive - Word will fail to save the file
and create the crash temp file. Because you can not save to the USB, if you
do not then save to the harddrive your file will be lost upon exit - the
crash temp word file will be unreadable or nonexistent.

Please fix this ASAP.

So this may explain what happened to my photo files I downloaded from my
camera via my Vista laptop and a network to an external drive connected by
USB to another computer! It destroyed the jpg markers making them
unreadable. It's obviously not just a problem with Word documents. Vista is
scary indeed. What a mess.
