Loss of Desk Top

After an iPod was connected to my PC I have lost Desk Top. After a cold
start I get wallpaper and nothing else, but I can run everything from Task
Manager and once a program (MS Office programs and other applications) are
open everything works on that program. But to change or add I need to return
to Task Manager. So I'm guessing that something is preventing the Desk Top
from opening. Are there any fixes for this?
