Loss of data from memory stick

Loss of data files from memory stick when computer is turned off or stick
removed, have used safe removal procedure to no avail. Was told that stick
needed to reformatted to NTFS but when I try to this the only option is
FAT32. On examination in disk management the disk is shown as SONY (I) 4.00GB
FAT32 (healthy Active) under a blue bar, and under a black bar 124.00 GB
unallocated what does unallocated mean and why is this appearing even when
the disk has been formatted to FAT32. The capacity is given as 3.99 and free
space is given as 3.99. Oddly all the folders remain on the stick but with
most or all the files they contain removed

This sounds like a hardware problem, a fault in the stick, itself. If
possible, return it under warranty.
