loss of audio from update

weekend

when my Conexant HD audio drive is updated from Service pack 2, my computer
loses all audio capability. As this happened before, I've set it to only
install updates when I approve them, but lately it's been updating when I put
it on standby, and I'm without audio.

Last time this happened I paid somebody to fix it, and he was able to delete
the update and restore the audio, but it cost me. How can I locate and delete
the update myself? Please advise.

Why don't you try downloading an updated audio driver from the manufacturer
of your computer?

Don't use Microsoft's Windows Update for
non critical driver updates such as your audio
driver.

Instead go to the PC manufacture's or the
manufacture of your Audio card or onboard
sound chip when updating any driver and
that rule also applies to: Video, Network, Etc.

I had the same problem on my HP laptop - the MS driver update killed my
audio. In my case, I went to the HP site and downloaded the latest Conexant
sound driver and my sound returned. Downloading the driver from the
manufacturer will replace the MS driver, so you don't have to uninstall or
anything like that. Just download and install. After that, you might
"hide" the MS update so it doesn't pop up again because MS will offer the
update again if it doesn't see it's driver installed and it will kill your
audio again. No need to pay anyone. Just follow the suggestions of the
previous posts and download the driver from the manufacturer and don't allow
MS to reinstall it. Post here again if you have any trouble finding or
installing it - don't like to see people pay for things when with a little
help they can do it themselves. Good luck.

Okay. went to Hp, found Conexant HD audio driver, downloaded & tried to install, but got this message: "Driver installation failed. Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver." This may be connected to another message I've been getting when I reboot: that I have a PCI device that needs a driver. However, when I try to install the PCI device, it says: This hardware was not installed because the wizard can't find the necessary software."....are the two related, and if so, how can I connect them? If not, how can I find the MEDIA device for the Conexant driver? Thanks. ingrid
