I am experiencing in losing data in flashdrives.
It seems that when files are copied onto flashdrive, I should wait for a
while before removing flashdrives from USB port. Does anybody know how
long should I wait before unplugging flashdrives. Jorge

Are you using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification
area? If so, it should tell you when you can remove the drive.

I am not aware of it.
Where Safely Remove Hardware is available? Jorge

Hi Jorge,

You can also open Explorer, right click on the drive and select "Eject".

It is in the Notification area (down near the clock)
You should always use it.
If for some strange reason it is not there, read here:

That works..it's the standard way to do it...

but the other suggestion to use "eject"

is a little less hassle[/QUOTE]

It is the "standard" way yes, but I have a drive that will state that
data was lost using SRH (even though nothing was accessing the drive).
Using Eject in Explorer results in no errors. So sometimes you need to
use either or.

Hi, all. If you look in Device Manager/Disk Drives/USB Device/Properties/Policies there is an option to Optimize for Quick Removal. If this is checked (I think it is defaut in XP) then you don't have to use the Safely Remove Hardware method. This should be checked for all the USB Devices in Device Manager.

There is a handy tool (usb safely remove!) at www.safelyremove.com that will
give you much more info when you want to remove a flash drive. It is not
free, but there is a free trial and if you don't pay for it, it becomes
nagware and is still usable. The nag makes you wait a while before it lets
you click 'order later', after which you can choose to safely remove your
device.
