Follow-up on 16 gig flashdrive Was: How big is the ocean; how big is my drive?

This is just a report. I pursue these things doggedly, even though
I've known for a while that I can't rely on this flashdrive in the
slightest.

Perhaps you remember the 16 gig no-name flashdrive I bought used,
which showed only 1 gig.

And it worked great, and I got back my 16 gigs.

Then I used it to copy files from upstairs to the basement, and it
seemed I didn't always get them all, but I was never sure what I had
copied. Maybe I hadn't copied the file after all. OTOH, it worked
sometimes, as with one 800M and one 2 Gig DVD iso files that I burnt
data DVDs with.

In the past couple days to test the drive, I kept in my main computer
and copied big files to it, to see how full I could get it, and a half
hour later sometimes, the files would be gone. Yet one 800M and one 2
Gig file remained.

I had created new sub-=directories to organize my space-usage, and
later, especially with the ones I *never* used, I couldn't delete the
subdirectories because it said they were not empty!!

Chkdsk and scandisk didnt' fix anything, and I just now reformatted.
I'll play with it somemore, because I'm curious and compulsive in this
way, but I think it is worn out, from overuse maybe, since older
drives were vulernable to that.

OTOH, my Sanza 8 gig flashdrive from 3 years ago works fine still.
Although I haven't filled it yet, and have only read what was written
to it 1 to 3 times. Still, it's never forgotten anything.

Hate to tell you - but it aint a 16gb drive.

It's a reflashed unit of a much smaller capacity and unreliable perofrmance
and frequent file correuption is the price you'll pay until you reflash it
back to its proper capacity.

Do some googling for fake usb drives, and be careful buying from Ebay or on
your next holiday to Macau or China.

I'd never bother with ebay flash drives. Frys electronics frequently has
decent 16 GB drives for $25 or less on sale. This week it's an HP V165.

It was a hamfest, but sometimes that's the same sort of thing. I'm
bad on faces and can't remember someone from one fest to the nex, even
if he would give me my money back, which half more or less wouldnt'
do.

Thanks. I"m going on a trip and I might end up borrowing a netbook
with only 16 gig, so I would need this.

How could I find out what it's proper capacity is? There wasn't even
a name on the package. Are you sure it's not worthless?
Do some googling for fake usb drives,

I will do that.

I havent' been to those places and don't expect to go. This was a
hamfest and I've gotten a lot of bargains at hamfests. I bought a USB
microphone new in box for 2 or 3 dollars and it was the best I've had.
When I looked it up, it retailed for 35 dollars. So I win some, I
lose somee.
