Loosing DNS server in Windows XP

N

Nice Jumper

I seem to be having problems with my netgear router RP114. It seems to lose
it's dns server.

I have a cable modem which the router is attached to, such that i can share
my broadband connection. I log into the router and receive a valid IP
address and can always communicate with the router. However, upon occasion
(and i have yet to track downt the pattern), I will receive a dns error in
Internet Explorer. The only resolution to this is to run the 'wizard' setup
on the router such that it resets itself, or turn it off.

I'm confused (as you probably are aswell by now!), anyone got any ideas!

Not sure about your setup and what you mean by:

Are you using your router as your DNS IP address in your machine?
Do you have Active Directory running?
Can you give us a little more info on your network configuration and post an
unedited ipconfig /all please to better assist?

Thanks

Can you elaborate on your assertation? Usually this is based on a
misunderstanding of the product or lack of knowledge/experience, but then
you may know AD pretty well and have reasons for your assertation. I'm just
very curious why you feel this way.

Please provide examples on why you *feel* that way about AD.

The whole thing with the original poster and his issue can be related to
many ADSL modem's lower than the normal MTU setting of 1500. I was awaiting
Nice Jumper's reply to further discuss the issue. The MTU issue is common
with many ADSL modems, and has nothing to do with AD or Windows in general.
Matter of fact, folks using Netscape on XP or W2k experience the same issue
with ADSL and the altered MTU settings, depending on who the provider is and
what equipment they're using at the CO. Since you are a Cisco specialist,
I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about.

There is a simple procedure to find out what MTU the ADSL modem is
utilizing. Al, I'm sure because of your experience and knowledge, you are
familar with the method.
