Can anyone tell me how to:

Save and restore VISTA desktop icons (i.e., WINXP layout.dll).

Run a "Command Prompt" from a VISTA Explorer directory tree (i.e., WINXP
CmdHerePowertoy).

Add a green "UP" arrow to easily move up the VISTA Explorer directory tree.

A way to show the file names being copied in drag'n drop copying "Time
Remaining" progress dialog.

Hard to believe I'm the only one that misses these deleted features.

Thanks.

Will working with this registry key let you add the Save and Restore desktop
icons feature?

"Tech. Notes: The application is named dkticnsr.dll, and is installed to the
Windows System ShellExt folder. The module is registered with the system as
a COM component. The registry key used for storage is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JOConnell\DeskTop."

I haven't been able to install and use Windows XP Power toys yet on any
build of Vista but no doubt Vista powertoys will be here soon. Maybe
someone has the way. I couldn't install Tweak UI and the others I couldn't
install simply won't open up and work.

I really don't think much of the Explorer folder oragnization in Vista and
much prefer the Win XP option to View>Arrange Icons by>Show in groups with
those 4 options that you can adapt to the particular folder like by name and
by last modified which especially suits a download folder.

You can hit the little name bar arrow to the right of the url and backtrack
to the "one up" in the hierarchy foler by erasing and then entering but
that's not as convenient as the green arrow and I agree.

They could have and should have retained the XP features in these areas and
you can try bouncing it off their very TIN EAR via your feedback mechanism
on the desktop but many of us have tried 60 ways to Christmas and they
largely ignore feature suggestions. I have been suggesting to them for 7
years to explain task manager processes and finally in 5456.5 they have made
a superficial feeble attempt. It's nothing like the guys at Sysinternals
would have created, and I suggested they collaberate with them since they
keynote so many of MSFT's large meetings but that fell on very deaf ears as
well. I was thinking of something like Sysinternals' Autoruns for Task Man
and MSCONFIG and suggested it directly to XP teams in chats multiple times
and to Vista team members as well. Try it and see how you like it--it works
in Vista.

You have plenty of company in missing these features. The ones I know
you'll get are the Powertoys and probably some more powertoys than you had
access to before.
