Looking for Smart renaming software

I'm looking for some software to rename files. Something fairly smart,
to where you can specify say for example, take all files in this
directory and it's subdirectories (excluding renaming folders) and
remove everything in the file names between [ and ] and/or change all
spaces to underscores _ . I have large numbers of files to rename and
am currently using Oscar's Renamer, which I love, especially for it's
macro feature ( which I use to rename files that are all basically the
same file name i just want formatted a little different), but I want
something more automated and quicker.

Gee I had a really smart one. Too smart.
It renamed itself and now... I can't find it. :)

those things. playing with it now, but dont think it quite meets my
requirements, but is useful.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/renameit

that last time i searched for similar programs.
