WinSolo 1.0
By Procode Development
http://www.procode.com.au/ *DEAD

WinSolo is a mini-application that is used to temporarily close all
background applications (even the ones that don't show up in the
Ctrl-Alt-Del Close Program window) in order to allow a sensitive
application to run with no interruption from other multi-tasking
applications.

WinSolo is especially useful for preventing errors when
burning/recording CDs. It shuts down all hidden and background
applications, allowing the CD burning process to run smoothly and
without any disk access glitches. It also helps when running
applications that complain of low system resources or run substantially
slower due to external programs accessing the disk (ScanDisk, Defrag).

WinSolo Deluxe has also been released with some additional useful
features, such as easy right-click "solo application" start up and
wrappers for making it easier to configure specific programs to always
use WinSolo when started.

Whatever you say Joe. You are the one at loss.

I have no reason to convince you if you are so sure its not like I say.

I'm not a hardware whizz -- I recall I played around with ramdrives long ago
(DOS days), but have long forgotten about it. Any URLs or tutes you can
point me to? I recall the basics but need to be refreshed on the specifics.

Winsolo? I'll Google for it, but can you give me a hint what is?

A ramdrive is software, not hard. Boot up your pc using a win98 startup
floppy and you'll have a ramdrive. It uses some ram to behave like a
(volatile) disc drive.

Winsolo shuts every process it can down except the one app youre
running. A good way to free up ram and thus boost performance with
machines using a swapfile.

The laptop currently runs XP. I can re-install my old 98SE but I'm loath to
do so because USB support in that OS was tempermental.

I've Googled to find some sites that discuss how to install a RAM drive in
an XP machine so I'll go down that route. However, even if a RAM drive is
installed, doesn't the hard drive power up and keep spinning even though
it's not being used?

I have not tried it yet but it looks like a real exe file in the zip
archive.

Thank you Roger. :) :) :)

I had my eyes crossed when I looked at the web site. :(

If you boot from CD and disconnect the hard drive, the hard drive
won't spin. Ever.

That's what I thought. So the presence of a ram drive doesn't of itself mean
that the hard drive isn't spinning correct? It either must be disconnected
or removed.

FWIW I have discovered a few sites that discuss running Windows off a CD. I
may try that.

One has nothing to do with the other. Think of a RAM drive as just
another Windows driver. Like a thumb drive, but using internal,
rather than external, RAM.
It either must be disconnected or removed.

Disconnected. Having it sitting in the laptop doesn't hurt anything.
