When you right click in windows and point to New and that
menu expands there is a list of programs to make a new
file for (notepad, bitmap image, wave sound). I am
looking for where that is located. I literally have about
30 options that pop up, and would like to delete some.

John,

I assume you are comfortable with registry changes. If not you should
be extremely careful. Save a restore point before proceeding.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT contains a key for each file type (i.e. .txt).
In many file type keys there is a subkey SHELLNEW. The safest change is
to rename this subkey to something like SHELLNEWOLD. The NEW menu entry
should disappear. To restore, just return SHELLNEWOLD to SHELLNEW.

If interested, you may do a registry search for SHELLNEW.

The easier way is to identify the file suffixes you want to delete from
the NEW menu and go directly to the SHELLNEW entry for that file type.

There may be a utility that will perform this registry hack. I vaguely
remember seeing one but I can't find the utility at the present time.

Hope this helps.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP!, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Templates page contains a line for each possible item, and you can
uncheck ones you don't want (and create new ones)
