The best one has got to be from the Hdrive manufacturer.
most of them do check\repair tools for their drives. For free.

If Maxtors` own software says you`ve got a faulty drive H.
Then you`d better believe it.
Is it out of warranty ?.
Rescue all your stuff off it while you can for safety.
It is possible to Fdisk a drive, and mark out bad blocks, altho`
personally, I wouldn`t risk my stuff on a `dodgy` drive.

I've tried the HD mfg's lo-level format utilites a few times...
but the bad sectors always seem to have come back anyway...

so I agree, just replace the drive...why take a chance?

HD Tune v2.51. Free and scans for errors etc.
I don't have a URL for it although I got it off this NG.
