HDD surface scan: write/verify vs. write/read

Hi all, I am testing an old PATA HDD with a surface scan utility, and am
given the option of write/verify or write/read.

What is the difference between those two tests?

Indeed it is; I recently purchased a used laptop, and I wanted to give
everything a solid once-over before I started getting attached to it.
The surface scan was the longest operation; I did the write/read test
which took all day, not finishing up until I was just heading to bed.
