Their ethics are a short summary of police ordinances: for them the
most important thing is to be a useful member of the state, and to air
their opinions in the club of an evening; they have never felt the
homesickness for something unknown and far away, nor the depths which
consists in being nothing at all. ___________Soren Kierkegaard

Bloody popunder advertising ***!"xy@ crap

I never see popups/popunders.

Maybe a half decent firewall would help you. My firewall blocked the
following 2 popup windows.

window.open("/fullpop.php?rurl=%2Fexitpage%2FGames.php", "exit",
"Height="+screen.availHeight+",Width="+screen.availWidth+
",left=1000,top=1000,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=yes," +
"directories=yes,menubar=yes,location=yes,resizable=yes")

ZoneAlarm Free. Which firewall do you use? And I use FireFox as well as
MSIE, though not exclusively. This time it was MSIE

It's not the job of a firewall to block popups :)

I stopped using IE a long time ago. I have no desire to be exposed to all
the malicious crap that it is susceptible to. Since I have started using
Firefox with Adblock, I have been surfing almost completely advertisement
and pop-up free. There have been a very small number of pop-unders that have
gotten through, but, they are becoming much rarer with each new update
release of Firefox.

If you must use IE for some pages you should consider using a shell like
Avant Browser http://www.avantbrowser.com/ . Several non-Firefox users have
posted strong preferences for this browser.

Perhaps Doc <postmaster@[127.0.0.1]> can expand on how he uses his firewall
to block pop-ups and pop-unders for you.

I don't use FF, I prefer one browser that works on EVERY site I visit. I
use IE exclusively (fully patched, and my custom settings for the various
zones), have tried FF and the others but prefer IE6SP1 (MyIE2, an IE
front-end). I see zero popups, almost no adverts on web pages, and have
never had any malware infest my PC. I run the odd malware scan, last two
were 9 weeks apart and everything was still squeaky clean.

I use Agnitum Outpost freeware version as a firewall. It is highly
configurable, with inbound and outbound protection. The download comes
with 6 plug-ins already installed, and I use two other plug-ins. The
plug-ins are ....
1. Adverts - block by size (eg 90x68) or html string (eg /advert/).
2. Content - block by site name, or by words on web page.
3. DNS Cache - lists and caches every domain name and IP address that
your browser connects to. Very handy for finding out where web pages try
to connect to.
4. Active content - select whether you want to accept/deny/or be prompted
for each and every site that wants to use the following a)Active-X, b)
cookies, c)referrers, d)Java and visual basic scripts, e)Java applets, f)
Pop-up windows.
5. Email attachments filter - with a heap of file types preconfigured and
the ability to add whatever file type you want.
6. Attack detection - list all IP addresses that attempt to connect to
your PC, and the port that was attempted.
7. HTTP log - a log of every HTTP connection made or requested. The info
I provided in the previos post was taken from this log.
8. Blockpost - allows you to block complete blocks of IP addresses, using
an IP and IP mask.

I also use Outlook Express. Lots of knockers here say it is unsafe. I
guess if used "out of the box" without any other safeguards it is. I even
use OE with HTML and preview enabled. BUT, with Outpost, I allow OE to
have http connections with a few selected sites that I get 'safe'
newsletters from and DENY all other http connections.
For newsgroups I use Xnews.

Other 'active' safeguards I use ....
AVG free.
SpywareGuard.
A good HOSTS file, in conjunction with eDexter.
Mike Lins Startup Monitor.

And 'inactive' safeguards ....
SpywareBlaster.
Spybot S&D immunizations.
Eric Howes IE SpyAd.

The following file types will not run on my PC without throwing up a
warning dialog first, giving me the opportunity to abort.

..DOC Microsoft Word© Document
..HTA HTML Applications
..INS Internet Communication Settings
..ISP Internet Communication Settings
..JS Script® File
..JSE JScript Encoded Script File
..REG Registration Entries
..SHS Shell Scrap Object
..VB VBScript File
..VBE VBScript Encoded Script File
..VBS VBScript Script File
..WSF Windows Script File
..WSH Windows Scripting Host Settings File
..XLS Microsoft Excel© document

I have ALL file extensions showing, even links on the destop have the
..lnk extension showing.

I have been an avid internet user since 1996, and have never had any
malware activate on my PC. Sure I have downloaded some 'bad' files (or
zips containing bad files) over the years, but everything has been
trapped before it can activate. I scan EVERY download with a virus
scanner AND a trojan scanner. I try to find out whether a program or
utility is malicious before I download it. Usually a google search of
"ProgramName"+"malware" will lead to a lot of links if a program is under
suspicion.

The above is how I do things, it works very well for me, ymmv.

I'll have a look at that. Been with ZA Free since earliest days

Got most of your mentioned programs. PopUps/Unders are main curse. I
disable a popup with one util and the problem is it shuts down GetRight, so
I suffer

The only infection I have ever experienced was one I deliberately allowed
to perform so that I could test various security tools. Many others have
tried to sneak in but been caught. I keep them in a little "zoo" for tool-
testing
