I have a corrupted disk, which appears to have been reformatted or has
some files in some partitions deleted.

Are there any software recommendations which get whatever files are
retrievable back from the disk?

First thing, do not access the hard drive for any reason before sending the
hard drive to a professional retreaival specialist or running a retreivial
software utility.
You can try the software in the link below.

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

I've once accidentally formatted the wrong disk, and lost 120GB of info, i've
managed to recover all i wanted using "get my dat back for ntfs"(there is FAT
version too), i strongly recomend it...

I like Easy Recovery Pro myself. It isnt free tho.

Can you give more details about the program "get my dat back for ntfs"
and the website for it?

First of all, make an image of your HDD and disconect it. THEN play with
image using data recovery software.

Excellent advice. Never work with the original data, unless it is
not really worth anything. Allways work on an image or copy.

You could try Rstudio. It's less expensive then many of the other packages.

I agree, the best practice in DR is to clone the failed hdd and recover the
data from the clone. Quality DR software will include a cloning function.

My problem is abit typical.I was trying to merge two partitions of my hard
disk with partition magic v8.It worked fine till the last step and then some
errror occurred and except for the partitions having the OS(win xp home sp2
with NTFS) all of them got corrupted ie the indexing got lost somehow I
presume. There were three partitions amounting to about 40 GB.I tried using
GetBack Data but thoough all the files are retrieved they are unreadavle
strating from simple .txt to doc pdf exe rar you name it.The date and size
and even the extensions look ok but they simply do not open. Moreover the .doc
files are asking for ASII and what ever I select its illegible. This sort of
problem occurred before and PCInspector helped that time but rhis time the
software is unable to recognize the drive
