I am just trying out GrabIt which I really like - it's much better than xnews for downloading binaries. Not sure if it's the sort of thing you are looking for though.

I recommend 40tude as an all-around newsgroup app. Outlook Express is okay,
but it's Micro$oft. I tried Agent (but it wanted to charge for too many
simple features others have for free) and xNews (I forget what it lacked--I
think it was some kind of option for blocking messages by a specified
sender).
