[Update] GrabIt 1.6.0 Build 928 Beta

A

Allan Higdon

This update was released on March 27th, but I haven't seen it here before.

<quote>
GrabIt is an application that finds pictures, movies, erotics, MP3 files, software and games on USENET news servers. The familiar looking interface makes selecting and downloading files intuitive and easy.

Latest Changes:

New GrabIt Usenet Browser technology enables the user to instantly see and download the latest binaries in a group without downloading headers
Increased the max amount of download threads to 32 (per server limit can be changed from inside the server properties window)
Using the Download with other server option in the batch will start downloading from the other server immediately
Batch progress bars are now located inside the binary list
Fixed the bug that resulted in a lot of empty txt files after importing NZB files with binaries that were not on the server
Fixed the bug that resulted in a lot of 'Article not on server' errors (mostly for Versatel and Zonnet users)
Redesigned the binary decoding process to generate less disk activity
GrabIt was rebuilt in a new development environment for better speed and compatibility
A lot of small bug fixes

New GrabIt Usenet Browser technology enables the user to
instantly see and download the latest binaries in a group
without downloading headers

This is a KILLER feature, but what is not obvious until you start
using the program is that it's enabled on a trial basis for a
specified number of headers. After that, you have to subscribe to
GrabIt servers for a monthly fee in order for it to work.

Still, if you know what you're looking for and use a free site like
http://www.yabse.com/ to create .NZB files that GrabIt WILL import,
you can still get around downloading ALL headers from a monster group
like alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd. Even a few days worth will
usually run into the tens of thousands.

Thanks for covering this, Ron. I use this program on an almost daily
basis (ver. 1.5.3) and love it. Even if the feature is disabled after a
while, it's not a big thing. I usually tell Grabit to "Update groups"
and then do something else like read ACF while the process is
completing. Since Grabit is so much better written than the buggy and
sometimes totally non-functional BNR2 (which I suffered with for so
long) and gets headers so much more quickly, I can live with it.

And remember, the program does incremental updating of groups, which is
faster than full updates.

Actually, Allan Higdon gets credit for posting the update on GrabIt. I
havent't been using it long, but what I see so far I like. Most of
the time I just use my regular newsreader for binaries (payware - see
header) largely as a matter of convenience, but it doesn't do .NZB
files and GrabIt does. I couldn't warm up to BNR2 either.

the inclusion of this feature also stops Grabit being used in conjunction
with a scheduling program as it pops up an "update group" box every time you
start the program and doesnt initialise Grabit until you click yes or no :-(

Isn't there any way to configure Grabit so that it doesn't exibit this
behavior? If not, you might try emailing Ilan Shemes with some feedback.
The address is at the bottom of http://www.shemes.com/

Seems to be very responsive to remarks and suggestions.

Do you mean a 'resume batch' dialog? - if so

edit/preferences/interface tick:

disable "save batch and exit" confirmation at application shutdown
disable "restart batch" confirmation at application startup.
