Looking for a different way to boot in safe mode

I am running windows XP Home and have recently added a Microsoft wireless
keyboard. Now when I boot up for a brief moment I receive the "no keyboard
detected" error. The computer still boots properly but the problem is that
the error lasts long enough that I miss the window to press F8 to bring up
boot options. Is there any way to work around this so I can boot into safe
mode?

Probably not, so keep your wired keyboard handy in case
you have to boot into Safe Mode.

Why not just buy a cheap PS2 keyboard and store it for those rare times that you need it?

Since I don't have a wireless keyboard, I can't vouch for
whether you'll have problems using either of these methods but
I'll pass them on anyway.

If I'm working on a computer and know I'll need to boot into
Safe Mode from time to time I'll place a shortcut to this
program on the Desktop.

BootSafe

BootSafe handles the dirty work of configuring your boot.ini
file. If you'd prefer to do this manually, take a look at this
article.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home SafeMode"
/fastdetect /safeboot:minimal

I have added a second line to boot.ini and change the time to 3 seconds.

You can also check SafeBoot under boot.ini tab in msconfig.
You have to uncheck SafeBoot before booting back to normal start.

Are you sure the wireless mouse is going to work in SafeMode?

Try continuously tapping F8 as soon as restart begins & see if it goes
into SafeMode this way. s

GateKeeper

The boot.ini file is a hidden, read-only file. It is located in the C:\
folder. To view this file, open My Computer, click on the C:\ folder,
and click "Show the contents of this drive," if you can't see any of the
files. Then click Tools, Folder Options, View. Scroll down and click
"Show hidden files and folders," scroll down some more, and clear the
"Hide protected operating system files." Once you can see the boot.ini
file, right click on it, and clear the read-only checkbox. Now you can
edit the file.

By the way, if you screw this up, you might not be able to boot Windows...
