Looking for a BASIC and cheap ftp server...

I'm looking for the simplest ftp server software I can find.

A friend (who is not very Windows literate) wants to be able to access the
computer sitting on his desk, at work, from home. I am planning on using
WebDrive (www.WebDrive.com) on his machine at home and need an ftp server on
his Windows Media 2002 computer in his office.

I know he is not going to want to spend very much (WebDrive is already going
to cost him $60) and he does not need anything complicated installed on his
computer at work - just a SIMPLE ftp server that can start be started when
he boots his computer and which he will not even know is there (icons in the
system tray, etc. are OK).

What can you suggest?

First step make sure that work allows this type of action.

If the work place does not do not allow it should not be used, and probably
would not work because network ports might be closed.

To take advantage of WebDrive security you want to install a SSL secure FTP
server.

This page explains how to use Windows XP IIS server with SSL.

IIs 5 ftp server comes with WinXP, but as is it is not SSL secured FTP
server.

This page shows a method to turn it into a secured ftp.

If you are willing to read and work, you can build a personal secured ftp
using the above method free; otherwise, you need to buy a sftp server and
SSL certificate (use live search you would find many).

Matching client and server, does just about anything you'd need, and free.

If it's for inhouse use then I'd suggest blocking the conventional FTP port
at the firewall, and only using SSL/TLS mode.

FileZilla Client is sftp, but the OP has already a client sftp (WebDrive),
on the other hand Filezilla server is Not sftp.
So if security has to be maintained Filezilla is a No Go.

Filezilla does support secure connections, and he can save $60 as it provides
both sides of the connection.

States: "FileZilla is a fast FTP and SFTP client for Windows with a lot of
features. FileZilla Server is a reliable FTP server".

Notice that SFTP is only mentioned for the server.

If you know that their is recent upgrade to the server can do SFTP, please
help me with a link.

Web Drive is a special (and very good at) Application it is Not your
mainstream grandfather ftp client. If I wrongly assumed that, the OP knows
why he selected this, Mia Culpa.
