Reinstall the Search Companion Files:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type: %systemroot%\inf , and then click OK.
3. Locate the "Srchasst.inf" file.
4. Right-click the "Srchasst.inf" file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files
that Search Companion uses.

NOTE: You may need your Windows XP CD-ROM to finish installing Search Companion.

I enabled the classic search in XP Pro.

I right click a folder, select SEARCH, and type in search criteria.

The "LOOK IN" field disappears. It should contain the folder that I
originally right-clicked. But I may have to TAB past that field, for the
folder to re-appear.

If I type a search criteria, hit ENTER, and LOOK IN is blank, I get

"" IS NOT A VALID FOLDER

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix.

This existed with SP1, and no difference with SP2.

Thanks for help,

John

Thank you. This didn't solve the problem.

I notice if I wait a while, differing times, sometimes the LOOK IN field
appears. I have a PII400. I wonder if this is some sort of
processor-dependent function, and is just working extremely slow on my
computer.

I also know I should have cleanly installed XP. Upgrades have always been
problems with MS operating systems. SP2 didn't solve it either.

That's okay. Everything else is working pretty good, and I'm getting too
old to worry about stuff like this.

Thanks,
John
