Long time finding Registered File Types

About a week ago I upgraded to Windows XP. Today I clicked on Windows
Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types to see what program was
associated with a particular file extension. They finally came up. But
it took almost a minute (on a 1 GHz maching with 384 MB RAM) to find
them. Then I closed the window and tried the same thing again. It took
almost a minute AGAIN.

Could somebody tell me how I can fix this irritating delay? Thank you.
 
Have you got anti-virus/anti-spyware software installed? Some
viruses/spyware can slow down your XP.

Thanks, I put my anti-virus program to sleep for a while, and I got the
file types within 3 seconds.
