Long Shutdown Time With Win XP (SP2) Home.

Shutdown seems to be taking an extremely long time to shutdown...several
minutes. Any ideas why? Have done multiple scans with Pest
patrol/Trend Micro/SpyBot and everything reports clean.

TIA

Do you have your machine set to purge the pagefile at shutdown?

Probably not since I'm not familiar with that. How do I go about doing
that?

Thanks

This is *not* the default setup in Windows XP and only users concerned about
their privacy should turn on this feature since the system shutdown takes a
lot more time if this option is activated. That is the reason I asked. A
slow shutdown can be caused by other factors as well. Try this link for more
info.

So, if I understand you correctly, having page file purging turned on is
preferred if there are "security" concerns...such as internet threats/
viruses/trojans? And the default setting is off.

I did the following edit:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management]
"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001

....which turns it on. You said this slows down shutdown...after I did
the edit it shut down much faster.

I'll look into the link you provided. I'm still concerned about
possible virus/trojan/etc. even though I get "nothing found from several
scans.

thanks for your help!

Hi Brian...

In my reply I mentioned *privacy* concerns. The link I mentioned will give
more complete information but briefly - purging the pagefile can be a
*security* concern only if other people have direct physical access to your
machine. There is really no relationship to other security issues such as
internet threats/viruses/trojans. The pagefile, or virtual memory, is simply
an area on the hard drive where Windows periodically swaps out data from
physical memory whenever conditions warrant this action. Consequently, the
pagefile can conceivably contain scraps of anything that was in memory at
one time, including banking info and other private data. One would need
physical access to your hard drive to ascertain any information in this
file. And be advised, at that level of scrutiny, there are numerous other
more revealing areas of a hard drive that could compromise *privacy*. For
the home user, there is really no concern. Perhaps the military or some
corporate entities might consider this a threat but, for most of us, mucking
around with this level of protection is simply being paranoid. It will
degrade the performance and your enjoyment of the machine and offers
virtually no benefits in the trade off.
