Long shut down process!!!!!

I can sit and watch a program on tv, come back, and XP is still trying to
shut down!!!!!!
What is happening? How do I get around this?

It happens occasionally. Is there something stopping the pc. If I force it
by pulling the plug the message is well known ".......XP did not shut down
properly......"

I think I tried Kelly's corner but the shut down stuff there brings me back
to the windows familiar Shut Down -- Restart interface.
I will try the other links too.
