Long, scrolling title

C

CW

I want to create a long title clip (approx 100 words
setting the scene) with the text slowly scrolling
upwards. I seem to run into two problems (a) a limit on
the text length (after a bit, nothing appears on screen
even though I'm typing away) and (b) there doesn't seem
to be a simple, basic, slow scroll animation style.
Boring one I know, but suited to the factual no frills
type of piece I'm creating.
Gurus, what clever ideas have u got?
Thanks

Hi there,

You will be pleased to hear that this is very easy...well mostly :)

The objective is to create a number of "Show Text Over Clip" inserts that
employ the Perspective Scroll method/effect...So

1) Create a text insert using the above effect and put maybe 20 words in
it...this obviously depends where a sentence finishes etc

2) Copy this clip and paste it back to the time line so that each one is
slightly overlain by the next etc.

3) Edit the text in each so that the whole thing will make sense when finally
viewed.

4) Adjust the overlay of the second one on top of the first so that when
previewed the second one start moving up the screen at the right moment.

5) Adjust the "WIDTH" of the 2nd insert on the time line so that its speed up
the screen matches the first insert. This makes up for the differing number of
characters etc.

6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all inserts are adjusted.

I just tested it with the Scroll-Perspective animation option.... using
about 200 words in a single text effect clip, and having it scroll over a
duration of 2 minutes.... just drag the right edge of the text clip to the
right as far as you want.

Use it as a title clip on the video track.... or drag it to the Title
Overlay track and run it over a background image or video clip.

The amount of text that can be used depends on the selected animation. This
one supports over 100 words...

Thanks... when you say "text effect clip" I'm not quite
clear and unfortunately keying in "text" in MM2's on-line
help drew a blank. By this, do u mean use the "Title on
the selected clip" type of title, or is there a special
type of clip that I should be using?
Many thanks

I guess that's my personal term... the text you create in MM2 goes either on
the video track or the title overlay track... it doesn't matter where you
create it, as you can drag and drop it to either track.... once on the
timeline, I call it a text clip...

Thanks John, does sound fairly straightforward albeit a
bit of a drudge. The one thing I don't like though (for
this particular usage) is the Perspective animation. It's
a very serious, even sombre, piece that I'm doing and
somehow that style doesn't quite fit. I think I saw it
described somewhere as the Star Wars style, and that just
sums it up. But not right for me on this one. Is there no
way of having just a straight vertical scroll?? Too
boring for most, I guess!
Thanks

Hi there CW,

With regard to the capacity of the Scroll effect...it is not one hundred words
(Hint, how big is a word)......it is lot of characters...never bothered to
count them because I do as I mentioned previously...anyway...

Yes you are right about it being Star Wars effect.

Without going to look I can not say for certain, but I think the answer is no
with regard to MM having a straight up scroll. For items like that I use the
very excellent program MovieDV version 6 from www.aiste.de That program costs a
few dollars and although it looks different it does just about everything that
software with a bloated price tag can do (Adobe for example)

I am not certain about this, I think you can download a trial program...there
is also the free version called MovieXone...its got some rough edges but if you
perceiver you may end up buying its big brother MovieDV as I did....I now only
use Movie Maker for some of its transitions...which you can create in
MovieDV...I do not believe in re-inventing the wheel if you see what I mean.

If you have trouble tracking the free version down, I can probably help you
out, if you are on broadband, but there would be a learning curve that might
not be worth the effort for a one off.

Much appreciated. I'll play around and see where that
gets me. Into trouble probably. Bi for now.

CW,

How about breaking up your text into smaller segments and
using multiple slides (scenes) and run one right after
the other. You might have to work a little with spacing
to make it look good, but at least it's an option.

I agree with you though...It would be nice to be able to
insert unlimited text into a "credit" slide at the
conclusion of the file.

Hi There,

That's an excellent comment...its one I also made....unfortunately from the
manner and style of the reply by the MVP PapaJohn, he does not agree, even
though he did make the mistake of talking about words instead of characters!!!

Good comment though by you, its how I do it...it also lets you change emphasis
by changing the colour, type or size of the font in use.
