Steve Molander

Been hosting a website with GoDaddy.com for four years. Have always used FP
(now using FP2002) over ftp. No problems until recently.

Now when I open the website through FP, it takes ~ 1 minute to get the log
in form, then ~ another 2 minutes to open the index page and at least
another minute or two to open the shared borders (including links).

Once the page is opened I can edit without any problem. Saving takes a bit
longer than I would expect but not to the extent of the opening sequence.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled server extensions on the server (using
GoDaddy's services). I've checked code to see if I have buggered code in my
header. I've cleaned up the themes, border and overlay folders to make sure
any old styles are completely gone.

Nothing changes. I'm also posting this to GodDaddy's support page but
thought I would come here to see if anyone else has seen problems as this.

How long since you've cleared your temporary internet files, and also the FrontPage temporary
files??
The FrontPage ones are cleared with your web open by clicking Tools > Web settings and clicking the
Advanced Tab and then the delete files button.

If no improvement, close FrontPage and do a windows search for files named *.web and delete all
found.

Then see if there's a difference.

However, you mentioned you're using FP over ftp on an extended server. You should open the site
using http://

I've cleared Internet Temps and Temp files on both machines that I use. I
didn't know about the *.web. I'll try that. Thanks.

If I open the site directly using ftp, it opens fine. I can copy and paste
files without any problem. If I click a page to edit, FP opens and I get
what's become standard procedure ... body of web opens, shared borders are
there but empty, images begin to show up as placeholder boxes in top border,
wait ... wait ... wait ... then images appear in top border and links show
up in left border.

Since you have FrontPage extensions on the server you should *not* use ftp://

Close your web and FrontPage. Delete the *.web file

Repair the extensions then open FrontPage and then File > Open Web and enter
http://yourwebsitename.com and open the site that way. I think you'll find your "problems" go away.

Just so I'm clear in my problem or how I use FP. Under almost every
condition I will open my webpage for editing using the method you called out
.... open FP, File, Open, webpage (or I go to my webpage in IE and click the
"edit" icon).

I have two websites I administer ... each on a different host. My personal
webpage is having no problems even though I'm also using shared borders (top
border only with links).

I will use WS_FTP Pro if I want to move a large number of files or back up
my webpage quickly (being aware of the hidden "_*" FP folders). I've used
this method on both sites since I first started building sites. This has
not caused any corruption or problems in the past. Either I'm living a
charmed life or I may have corrupted something this time around?

Could I have something corrupted in my file structure at GoDaddy? Are there
hidden files beyond what I can see through FP or ftp that need attention by
the server admins?

BTW ... just opened the website using FP and it took over 3 minutes for a
very basic site to open. www.rayba.org And no *.web files found on my
local drive.

Ok.
The problem with publishing via ftp is that when you select FTP, FrontPage "assumes" there are no
extensions on the server and therefore "may not" publish any / all files associated with features
that require extensions.
I also have ftp'd to an extended server, but I *very seldom* do, because imho it is much slower than
publishing via http://
( at least it is on my 2K Pro FP 2003 machine over a DSL line ( FP2002 also, I have them both
installed ))

Assuming you're running Windows 2000 or XP and also considering that FP uses Internet Explorer
settings when accessing the WWW try these two things with FP and IE shut down.
1. Right click the IE icon on the desktop, click Properties, click the Programs tab, click the
"reset web settings" button, in the pop-up uncheck "reset my homepage and then click Ok and OK.
2. Open a command window and type: ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.
( note there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns )
When done close the command window, and launch FP and see if there's a difference.

Let us know the results

Thanks! I'll give that suggestion a try. Yes, both workstations are
running XP Pro.

Also ... you explained the problems with ftp'ing well. I understand ....
but this may be a novice question, but when you refer to http:// for file
transfer ... what exactly is that procedure or what are you using? I've
always moved files by either using ftp or copy and past into FP folder
structure. If there's a better way, then I'm all for it!

Thanks

the http:// method.

1. The first time I publish a new web to an extended server I enter the publish location as
http://websitename.com then enter user and pass when prompted and "off we go"

From then on, I always edit / update local either on a disk based or server based ( IIS ) web, then
to publish, with the web open, simply click File > Publish web ( Publish site in FP 2003 ) with the
publish options set to "Changed pages only" and FP automatically publishes the updates.

To change from ftp:// to http:// simply enter a new publish location and change it to
http://websitename.com

Thanks!

I just followed you reset and dns cache clearing and no change.

If I go to open www.stevemolander.com and click edit, I'm put into edit mode
within seconds.

Seems like my problem is either code within www.rayba.org or something with
my hosting provider.

Suggestions from here?

Interesting:
www.stevemolander.com is running on an Apache server with extensions.

www.rayba.org is running on MSFT IIS 6.0 with extensions. I would ask the host to run a server
health check and to also check / restore the extensions.

Thanks!!!! I wasn't sure exactly what to ask them to do.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the help.

One more thing I always do is: if I want to edit the "published" version on the server I always
open it in FrontPage using File > Open Site and entering http://webname.com I never open it in IE
and then select Edit from the IE file menu. Although it works, it can be problematic.

If you're using FP 2003 you might also want to "Synchronize" the web site.

So one last question .... since my process always has me editing the files
directly on the host computer, I don't have copies of all of the pages on my
local drive.

In the past I've made backups of my site using WS-FTP and copying everything
over using transfer manager. Sounds like I don't want to use ftp any
longer.

How can I bring copies of my pages and files FROM the host site TO my local
hard drive? I see where I can "export" page by page but don't see anywhere
that allows me a mass copy or the ability to copy entire folders and
content.

Maybe I'm just missing something here .....

You would use Publish, and unless you specify what NOT to publish, FP will bring down everything it needs (and sometimes more...like log files). I don't bring down the logs, because I get errors when publishing up - as they're not writeable...but you can fix that later.

Problem resolved!

Turns out my asp folder was corrupted on the host. I ended up having the
vendor completely reset my folder and now everything works great!

Thanks all for the assistance.

"Rob Giordano (aka: Crash Gordon®)" <[email protected]>
wrote in message You would use Publish, and unless you specify what NOT to publish, FP will
bring down everything it needs (and sometimes more...like log files). I
don't bring down the logs, because I get errors when publishing up - as
they're not writeable...but you can fix that later.

First, I'd have your host check the FP extensions as they are likely
'busted' from using WS_FTP.

Once they do that.. open your site live with FP and File |Publish Web (Site)
and tell it where to Publsh...on your hd. Usually its to C:/My Documents/My
Webs...then whatever you want to name it..FP will create a new web there for
you. (usually).

| So one last question .... since my process always has me editing the files
| directly on the host computer, I don't have copies of all of the pages on
my
| local drive.
|
| In the past I've made backups of my site using WS-FTP and copying
everything
| over using transfer manager. Sounds like I don't want to use ftp any
| longer.
|
| How can I bring copies of my pages and files FROM the host site TO my
local
| hard drive? I see where I can "export" page by page but don't see
anywhere
| that allows me a mass copy or the ability to copy entire folders and
| content.
|
| Maybe I'm just missing something here .....

Also wanted to say thanks for clearing up the proper way to publish changes
to a host. I'm now using the "Publish Web" menu and that works slick!
Thanks!

wrote in message You would use Publish, and unless you specify what NOT to publish, FP will
bring down everything it needs (and sometimes more...like log files). I
don't bring down the logs, because I get errors when publishing up - as
they're not writeable...but you can fix that later.

|
|
|
