Long Delay For MS Mail To Start Initially

Jason Saffer

Hi all,

I've run into a symptom and I'd like to find out if others are running into
this as well, and if there's a fix.

I have transferred my messages and my address book from Outlook Express 6
(on my Windows XP desktop) to my new Windows Vista Home Premium system.

First question: When I first run Windows Mail, it takes about 45 seconds for
the program to get past the splash screen and to be ready to work. Is this
normal?

Second question: Once Windows Mail is up and running, I then do a Create
Mail. The first time I do this, it takes about a full minute for the Create
Mail window to fully open. I notice this is happening only when I've got my
2000 Windows Contacts address book filled. If I delete all those addresses,
the Create Mail window opens up within a few seconds. Again, is this normal
behavior or is there a fix?

I'd appreciate knowing if others run into this symptom and if anything can
be done about it. I'm running Windows Mail on a brand new HP laptop that
came with Vista already installed.

Thanks for the help!

you need to cleanup WM and compact the data base.
with overly large database WM does get slow.

Thanks for this reply. Can you let me know how I clean up Windows Mail? Is
there a particular way to do that. Same question regarding compacting the
database. How do I do that? Will cleaning up and compacting affect Windows
Contacts (my address book) or just the mailboxes and messages?

My contact list has about 2500 e-mail addresses. You'd think that Microsoft
would take into account that users have a lot of contacts and create the
program so that it doesn't choke on that.

Thanks for the help!

I think the problems you are seeing are due to the large number of contacts
you have.

You can compact the database using my WMUtil program
(www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) but I don't think that will help much.

with Sent Items folder, set it to organize by date and scan through the messages deleting the ones that are old or are no longer needed for reference.
what I do is right click on Deleted and delete all.
then force compact by setting the maintenance number to 1.
when the compact is done go back and set the maintenance compact back to a reasonable number, I chose 5.

I have exactly 1 contact in my addressbook and it takes over 2 minutes for
vista mail to start and let me in the inbox. So the problem with these slow
starts is deeper then that

You can try this:

1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program titled cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

Also see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

I indicated that for him the issue could be the 2000 contacts. That doesn't
mean there aren't other possible issues.
