Long Boot Time

One-year old Gateway P4 2.6 GHz 512 MB RAM 800 MHz FSB computer with a
brand new installation of Windows XP Home from the Gateway restoration
CD. When the computer boots, it hangs on the black screen with the
horizontal bar graph that occurs prior to the "Microsoft Windows XP
Home" start page for about two minutes. The computer worked fine before
the reinstallation, so it is unlikely that it is a hardware problem.

I have been through the BIOS to make sure that it is not looking to boot
from a non-existent device. The hard drive is properly recognized in the
BIOS. QuickBoot is enable in the BIOS. The computer boots to a CD in
normal time. SpinRite boots and runs normally.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com indicates no boot or other virus.
Network boot is disabled.

You'll probably need to disable some of your programs in the Startup for it
is loading all your programs and using up your valuable system resources.
Start/Run/type MSCONFIG and click OK. Click the Startup tab
now disable/uncheck everything except your anti-virus, if Norton, it will
start
with NAV. Click Apply and Close. Reboot.
Disabling does not delete anything, all programs will run when activated by
clicking respective listing or icons.

The bar graph you describe sounds to me like the Hibernation restart. I
would use the start menu, Shutdown option to see if it changes behavior on
restart.
