logonui.exe Problems!

I have a laptop running windows XP Home edition, and I recently had a hard
drive failure.

I was able to get the system back by running Chkdsk, but still have some
outstanding issues:

· One of my users accounts has disappeared, and windows can't open
the User Accounts control panel

· When I boot the machine I get the following 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
error message

o C:\windows\system32\logonui.exe

o The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

o CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0a 02

o Choose 'Close' to terminate the application

· I have to repeatedly close this window before the system will come
up

· I will also get this error message during a session and the PC will
shut down when I select close.

I suspect the failure has resulted in a corruption to the User information
in Windows XP, but have been unable to find a solution. Can anyone suggest a
fix please?

You looks like having a 16 bit program running in 32 bit environment or your
system is infected with viruses?.
Do you have Norton installed on your machine?.

Do you have sound Blaster 2.0?.
Scan your computer for malwares and Viruses to make sure the system is clean.

Nass, Many thanks for your reply,

I have McAfee, Spybot, Adaware & Spywareblaster all running and up to date.

I am not using Sound Blaster 2 either.

I followed the NTVDM troubleshooting with no luck. As part of this I
re-installed the logonui.exe from the XP release disc, and the MS-DOS
subsystem error went away on bootup, but the system halted at the Windows XP
entry screen without any user icons available for selection!

I read on a bulletin board that recovery of the windows\system32\nusrmgr.cpl
file can rectify the problem with opening the User Accounts Control Panel. I
tried this but am still unable to open the control panel.

So I still get this MS-DOS error message, and more importantly can't get
access to all of my user accounts. I still suspect that the disc failure has
left an essential part of the user system info corrupted. I would like to
avoid having to re-install the operating system if possible.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Gary
