logon profiles missing

Laptop froze up yesterday, so had to kill the power to get it to shut down.
When i restarted, windows gave me the logon screen but there are no profiles
listed, it's blank. Tried using ctr-atl-del and typing in different
usernames, my default one and administrator, and it didnt work. Tried
rebooting in safe mode, and still no profiles listed. Any suggestions on what
i should try? Clean install is not an option because there is a lot of
information I need. Windows xp home edition with service pack 2.

Boot to recovery console (from setup CD) and run the expand command on userinit.ex_
