Logon problem

Hi,

We have two windows 2000 server machine running in our
domain with DNS server configured on both. One of the
server hard drive is about to die because we can hear
knocking noises in the hard drive.

To avoid any problems I made an image of entire hard
drive on a new hard drive with exact specification and
switched it with the original hard drive.

On the first attempt the machine booted normally and I
could see that all the configurations and setups were
intact in its original state.

After about 3 to 4 hours of normal operation the server
logged off automatically and returned to the logon
screen. Now it just would not let me login even with
administrator account. Every time I try to login it will
go through the process of loading the profile checking
security and finally will say saving your settings and
log off automatically. It does not even return any
messages or errors. Even the shutdown button has been
disabled on the logon screen options.

Any thoughts or any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Shekhar

This typically happens when hard disks are changed. Before you
change disks, delete any inappropriate or non-existing devices
as per Step 2 below.
1. From dos, copy userinit.exe to all the other hard drives
This should allow you to log in.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/:
delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\<DRIVE_LETTER>:"
3. Point KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/
Winlogon/Userinit to the correct location of userinit.exe
See also http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249321

You can also edit the registry of the problem machine via
a network connection to point the paging file back to where
it belongs:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management
