hi
after a pc crash I have the following problem with WinXP pro Workstation
when I try to logon I get the message: unable to logon, specified domain is not available

my computer was never member of a domain !!! just a local workstation
After Ctrl-Alt-Del I get the normal logon window with Name and Password box, no 3rd box with domain name
so I cannot logon locally either

When I start the recovery console I can logon with my Admin account, no problem, so it`s not a password problem

any hints are greatly appreaciated

You should have a button on the login screen that says "Advanced" or "More
Options" or something like that, if you have click on that and select your
computer from the available list.
If that doesn't work then login in "Safe Mode" (press F8 during boot) go to
your system properties and make sure your PC isn't set to login to a domain.

hi Neil
thanks your help is greatly appreciated
1. If I click advanced then I don't get this 3rd item, the dropdown where you can select your computer or the domain
this is probably because it never was member of a domai
2. If I boot up in Safe Mode (F8 and so on) I do get this message, even in Safe Mode I can't log-on because of this "domain not found" message

Is there a way to change or reset the local security policy settings via the recovery console

thanks for your help
