Cannot logon to XP after changing network settings

Hi. I have changed the network settings on a Windows XP machine and
after rebooting, it no longer lets me logon.

After entering the username and password it tells me "The system could
not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct"

The problem was caused when I used the Network setup wizard to change
the network settings from a business network to a home network. I
guess that I have removed the domain settings or something and that it
is now trying to logon to WORKGROUP rather than the domain that it
used to logon to when it was used in the office.

It is a laptop and it has not been in the office for months and it has
not connected to the office network for months. I thought changing it
to a home network would let me share its drives with other machines in
the house.

My question is, how do i get to logon to this machine again? I can't
find an option to let me enter a domain name and even if I could, I
don't know the full name of the domain it used to connect to.

Bring it back to the office and try logging on through the Domain.

I'm afraid I can't take it back to the office, I no longer work there!

Surely when I logged on it was logging on to the local machine as well
as the domain? Usually there is a drop down to select the domain you
want to logon to but now that I have set it to be a home network it
doesn't give me the option to enter or select a domain.

What happen when you boot up the machine and press ALT+CTRL+DEL, do you get
the Drop down. If you do try to log in and delete or Disable the Domain
Account on this machine.
Or try to Join a workgroup then try to Delete the Domain account after
creating a local one.

Hi, when I hit ALT-CTRL-DEL to get the login it does not give me an
option to enter a domain or to select a domain from the drop down. If
I press ALT-CTRL-DEL again nothing comes up. I can;t see a way to get
any further options on the logon screen.

Wipe it and reinstall the OS.

I can see that reinstalling might be the only option but I feel that
this can't be an unusual mistake to make. I don't understand how the
logon is only related to the domain (which it was never able to access
for the last few months and I was logging in every day so it must have
been logging in locally).

I still know the username and password, why doesn't this work to
perform a local login?

Do you get a drop down list, what is there?.
When this machine was joined to the Domain have you ever been able to use a
Local account on it?, it looks like you have an Image installed!.
What happen if you logged into safe Mode and create a local account.
I cannot see other way other than Reformat and Clean installation of the
Operating system, but you will lose every thing on this machine!.

By joining the Workgroup you have effectively disjoined from the domain
and the trust to the domain has been lost, you can no longer logon to
the domain. The only way to log back on to the machine
now is with a local administrator account. Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del
twice at the logon screen and try to log on using the built in
Administrator account, any network/IT administrator worth his salt
should have set a password on the account but maybe the account has no
password, try leaving the password box blank and press <Enter>. If you
cannot login without a password you can use a password reset utility
like this one: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

No, I don't get a drop down list. It only shows the Username and
Password entry box and then buttons "Ok", "Cancel", "Shutdown.." and
"Options <<<".
When I hit the "Options <<<" button it just removes the "Shutdown"
button, It does not show any other options or allows the entry or
selection of a domain.

I always logged in with the same usernam eand password that used to be
used in the office. I never tried to logon with any other account so I
don;t know is a local account logon was possible
it looks like you have an Image installed!.
When you say there is an image installed, what is an Image, what do
you mean?

John John, I don't see another screen when I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at
the logon screen.

I have tried the administrator account and there is a password set and
I don't know what it is.

I'll try using the software you linked to and see what I can do.
Thanks.

John John, Thank You! The software you linked to has allowed me to get
access to the machine under another account by clearing the password.

I really thought I was going to be losing everything on this machine
simply because I changed the network settings and when I saw two
people recommending wiping the hard disk and reinstalling the
operating system my heart sank.

I'm now in the process of re-setting the existing accounts so I get
the user settings back on my original account.

Thanks again, if we lived locally I'd definitely be buying you a beer!
