Logon failure after Windows 98 SE upgrade into WIndows 2000 Professional

Peter Chang

I just upgraded my Windows 98 SE disk with FAT32 into
Windows 2000 Professional with NTFS. The upgerade process
seems to be very smooth. No major hickup. After the
normal driver warning and software upgade warning. My
system booted into Windows 2000 Pro installation.

The last step during the upgrade is that Windows 2000
asked me to enter password for the user id under Windows
98SE. I entered "password" for ease of memorization.

My PC booted into Windows 200 and asked me to logon. I
typed "administrator" followed by the
password "password". I see the background screen of my
desktop but then the desktop immediately shutdown and
logged me out back to the logon screen.

The upgrade seems to be completed but I am stuck with no
way to access my Windows 2000.

I made a image copy of my WIndows 98 so I can repeat the
upgrade process.

Does anyone has any suggestion how to fix my problem? I
do not think it is an upgrade process problem. It is
painful not be able to see the desktop after logon with
the proper password.

IMO it's simply not worth the trouble, given that you'll more than likely
end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind
from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Hi, can you be more specific about the following. I have
the Window 2000CD but I do not understand your instruction.
"When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and
or other partitions found. After you delete the partition
(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting
the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments with your new install."

Once you deleted the existing NTFS partition, don't you
lost that partition?

How do you abort the install? Just power-off the pc?

Thanks.

* Yes, that's the desired result.

* Believe it's F3 but I could be mistaken.

I have exactly the same problem, have you had any replies?
the only thing i noticed is that during the upgrade the
machine rebooted but carried on with the upgrade. But like
you say I entered no password and I am now unable to log in
