logon error - Win XP Pro

I get the following error messages during logon to a winxp pc.

The C:\WinNt\System32\csrss.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode.
and
Could not load or run C:\WinNt\System32\csrss.exe specified in the
registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference
to it in the registry.

Th file does exist on the computer in the system32 dir. Any help or
sugestions greatly appreciated.
