Logon application error

It is getting frustrating!!! Problem: Turn on the computer, goes through
the BIOS, when it gets to logon screen, a popup window appears stating that
there is a logon.exe application error also stating that a specific
instruction could not be read in a specific memory location. I am then given
two (really 3) options; click OK to cancel program or to click CANCEL to
debug. Both of these options attempt to reboot the computer. The other
option, not touch it at all, leaves the pop up error screen which can be
moved to almost out of sight and I can use the computer. I am not sure if my
computer information will help but here it is:

Antec case with 450 powersupply
Abit AN8 Ultra Motherboard, all bios and drivers updated
AMD x2 3800 cpu
2 512 dimms ddr 400 crucial memory
eforce 6800 gs pci-e video
Windows Home XP sp2
Plus FDD, DVD-RW, and other basic stuff.

I have attempted the following which have not helped.

1. Ran virus scans from 4 different vendors none of which found any
problems. Done both in regular and safe mode.

2. Ran MS antispyware, spybot, and adware in both regular and safe mode.

3. Created a new admin logon and deleted the original.

4. Originally had 4 512 dimms and removed 2 of them.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in
the System and Application logs for the boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative
Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the
error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using
copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no
further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the
button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email)
and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Your link for some reason heads the list when you do a
Google search on logon.exe. However, it would seem
that updating definitions and running the users
anti-virus programme in safe mode should deal with the
problem as others record the file as a point of attack.

If it doesn't then an online scan by Trend would be my
next step

I have created a tool that will replace your missing or corrupted
winlogon.exe and ole32.dll files. You will need 1 blank floppy disk.
Download the tool from the link below. Run the file and it will copy the
necessary files to the floppy disk. Once created put that floppy in the
infected computer and reboot it (Note: the computer must be set to allow
booting from the floppy) Follow the prompts and agree to the license
agreement. At the A: prompt type "wnfix" without the quotes and press enter.
If successful it will tell you. Reboot. If not then let me know.

If your root drive is C:\windows then click here
http://216.122.228.48/downloads/wnlog.exe

If your root drive is C:\winnt then let me know and I will create a custom
disk for you.

If your root drive is anything other then C: then let me know and I will
create a custom disk for you.
