Hi People,

Anyone know the best method or strategy for monitoring Windows XP
logins so that one can tell what excactly is happening from the minute
a user logs in until the time the desktop is available to be used? The
Event Log tells half the story but doesn't say everything. Any other
utilities that are handy?

Thanks,
Stephen.

Just curious, why do you want to do this?

A valid question; where I work we have always experienced slower than
normal logins on our fleet of Windows XP computers. It's now become an
important issue and one that needs looking at. Normal login is 3
minutes and can take 10 minutes plus!

What is your network configuration (Domain/Workgroup) ? - How many
PCs are interconnected. Are there full time staff maintaining it or a
contractor
handling support ? Are you describing boot cycle times or the time from
entering password to usable desktop ?

Ensure that you have good DNS name resolution in your environment.
All Windows XP clients should point to an internal DNS server that is
authoritative for the domain.

If that is OK, then you might want to enable UserEnv logging
and take a network trace to see where the delay is:

Also, are you using a login script? Could be something in there that is
slowing things up, like trying to map a drive to a server that no longer
exist.

Thanks Carey for some very interesting suggestions that will be
investigate :)

R McCarty: This is a Domain environment with 5000+ PCs and I am
refering to login times as from the minute the user enters their
password to the moment they can use the desktop.
