I am trying to build my first website and am using Frontpage software. Can
anybody clarify the procedure as to how I can best build a webpage that you
have to login to in order to view a collection of photographs it contains?

Your host will have to support subwebs and unique permissions under the FP Server Extensions

This is exactly what I do in my web site. As pointed out by another
poster, your host has to support subwebs which can then be accessed by
a username and password. Your host whould be able to tell you how to
set this up.
