We're running Windows MCE at home with all the latest updates as of whatever
was available a few days ago.

We only have one account on it, passworded. We usually logoff and turn off
the monitor. When leaving it there for a long time without using it,
sometimes you will not be able to type to enter your password.

Has anyone else encountered this or have a fix? I would hate to have to
reinstall everything because I just did a fresh install not too long ago
(few weeks ago actually).

Perhaps you neglected to Disable the computer from turning off all the
USB ports and then the keyboard has no power?

Just to add to what "Bob I" wrote, open the Windows Device Manager by typing the
following into the "Run" box on the 'Start Menu' :

c:\windows\system32\devmgmt.msc

....and navigate to the "Keyboards" entry.

Then left-click on the item that represents your keyboard under this item and choose
"Properties"

Look under the "Power Management" tab, uncheck the box labelled "Allow the computer
to turn off this device to save power" to disable it.

Do the same, if necessary, to "USB Root Hub" under the item "Universal Serial Bus
Controllers".

Thanks for the help so far. I looked and the keyboard is PS/2. I went into
Power Management and turned off the Sleep Mode crap. Maybe that will do it.

I noticed the keyboard DOES work. It's just that the Windows login screen
doesn't do anything. Reason I know the keyboard work is because I can press
CTRL-ALT-DEL and login through there instead.

I'm confused, you can login despite not being able to login?!?
CTRL-ALT-DEL normally brings up the login screen. You have a "funny"
screen saver that "looks like a login"?

No. When you start up Windows XP you get the login screen. It has a blue
background, contains the username and their avatar. It has a box where you
enter your password. Here is a picture of that screen:

Not my picture. I just Googled it. On that screen after being logged out for
some random time it will not let me type.

However, if you press CTRL-ALT-DEL it brings the other screen which has a
login screen in which has no avatars. You can shutdown and login from there.
That one works. If I remember correctly it looks like this:

... and from there I can hit OPTIONS and it will bring up this:

.... in that one I !can! type. In the first picture I showed you, though, I
cannot type.

... I'm not 100% sure if the second two pictures are correct since I'm at
work right now and not sitting in front of the computer with a problem with,
but that sounds correct to me.
