The "music" that XP plays when starting up has become garbled. I've also
noticed XP locking up for no reason. Are the two related ? If yes, what are
my options to fix ?

This sounds like either a malware infection, or a hardware problem getting
worse. Either way, it's probably not a network problem.

I'd suggest that you ask this question (maybe with more diagnostic detail) in
