Login/Logout problems

I posted this first to the “Windows XP Help and Support workgroup’ last week
(10/14/04) but got no answer. I hope I get some hemp here.

My old machine died so I bought a new bare bones P4 machine, put in my old
drives, formatted the 120 Gig boot drive to NTFS and installed XP and SP2.
When that was done, I put back all my data and installed the same apps that I
had before on XP, such as Office 2003, Sonic’s MYDVD, Norton Antivirus 2004,
ZoneAlarm Pro 5.1, etc..

The problems that I have all relate to logon and logoff. I have 3 user IDs
on the machine, all are admin. After I boot, I can start all three IDs with
no problem. However, if I boot just one or two IDs and run for a while (a
few hours) and then try to switch (start a login) to a second ID, that ID
won’t start. If I try to logoff an ID, the programs shutdown and the machine
just comes back to the welcome screen or hangs just showing that ID’s
background and I have to reset the machine to get back to running (and by the
way, SCANDISK did not run after the reset). When I had an ID that would not
logon, I created a new ID and tried to switch to it, but the new ID would not
log on.

I also have a problem with Logout. If I do a logout of and ID, the running
programs shut down correctly but the system hangs just showing the user’s
background and never goes back to the welcome screen. Shutdown of the entire
system works correctly.

Is there a fix for this or some way to repair the problem?

I finally spoke to level 2 tech at Microsoft. He had me install a second
(new) Windows system and to the machine and after each step, try the problem
again. That way I could reboot and use my full system to do work and
experiment when I coud find time. What seemed to create the problem was
after I installed Spy Sweeper (V3). and after I removed it the problem did
not reoccure. I don't know what I will do without the Spy Sweeper but I now
ave a much more stable system. Good luck.

I am going out of town today so if you need help installing a second system
write me and I will try to help next week.
