all of a sudden, when i turn the computer on, it gets to the login to windows
screen, so i hit enter, and it starts signing in, and then it logs off and
brings me right back to the login screen.

is there a way to fix this, other than reformatting or restoring?

Hi Adam,

Run a spyware cleaner lately? The userinit value may have been corrupted by
the removal of blazefind. It adds wsaupdater.exe to the logon value in the
system registry, sometimes appending it, sometimes replacing it. Running
Adaware or other cleaners detects and removes wsaupdater.exe, but doesn't
correct the registry damage. If this is the case, then you may need to load
the registry hive from another installation and change it. This is the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On the damaged installations it's one of these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

Another "quickie" method of resolution is to load the Recovery Console (see
below), copy userinit.exe as wsaupdater.exe from the command prompt, then
restart normally. Once in, go and change the registry value back to what
it's supposed to be and delete the copied file. To do this, use these
commands:

C:\Windows>
C:\Windows>copy C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe
C:\Windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe

Then you can exit once completed.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

This can also be done by using the 6 disk boot floppy set mentioned in the
above article, as it loads enough of the Recovery Console so that you can
copy the file. This is particularly useful if you have an OEM installation
that includes only a Restore CD, or no disk at all.

Yes i did run ad-aware before this happened. so that's the cause of it.

Someone else on here had the same problem, and said if they used their XP
disc and do a few things that works too. unfortunately, i dont have one.
all i have is the 4 discs i got from HP for system restore. My friends who
know a bit more than i do said they thought it'd be on those, but nothing
worked. i dont want to system restore! My friend got to a C:/ screen or
whatever and tried commands but each time it said "bad file name or command".
So now i'm still looking around for someone with an XP disc

Hi,

The boot floppy set will work for this as well.

Home edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290

Professional edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

All you need to do is the copy command I previously mentioned from the
command prompt, then remove the boot disk and restart the system.

I have tried the discs, but it takes me right to the system restore options.
I got an XP disc from someone else, but it's a dell disc. I tried it
anyways, and i can get to the recovery console, and i go to "Repair", and i'm
in a DOS screen to type commands. but i dont really know commands, and the
ones the come up when i type HELP, dont help, cus i dont know what they mean.
i tried GOTO, but it didnt take it. could it be because it's a dell disc on
an HP? or i just dont know what commands to use?

detailed instructions would rock! maybe on what to do with the 4 HP discs.
all i get is the option to system restore, exit, or go to ediagtools.

thanx for the help so far

Rick,
I've done the recovery console/copy routine, but still have the same
login/logout problem. Are there other causes/fixes?

I was wondering that since my 4 system recovery discs should work, what do i
do? do i have to go through part of system restore? if so, how much of it?
and will it erase my hard drive in the process? like, is one disc the one
that clears everything, one that has xp on it.... you know what i mean?
